To start

My name is Guenter Friedrich Wilhelm Finkbeiner. I was born on November 16, 1930 at Baiersbronn-Obertal as the son of a teacher. We were four children: Ines was the eldest, then I, then Peter. Uwe was by far the youngest, nine years younger than Peter. After several transfers we finally settled at Dennach. In 1939, our father had to go to war. He was killed in Italy in 1944. The remaining family moved back to our grandfather's house at Obertal.

What did I do?

At 15 years of age, I was the man in the household. There were plans for me to learn something, but no chance to realize them at the time. So I made my living taking up this and that. On the way, I met my wife Ilse: we married in 1955. By 1959 I remembered that I knew quite a bit about music. I found congenial friends, and our quintet started touring the country. We also played for U.S. officers' clubs from Germany to Spain to Morocco. When our first son, Georg, was born, the time had come for a more settled life. We were back at Obertal when our second son, Christoph, was born. I tried my hand at several occupations, until I ended up with the Federal Post, where I spent the last years of my professional life. Our son Georg died in a tragic car accident.

My hobby: the Finkbeiners

As pensioner, I took an interest in the Finkbeiner family history. I started to gather all pertinent information. One day, I met Christian Finkbeiner, a bit later Rolf Finkbeiner. Our respective abilities add up nicely, and we have been working together ever since - mainly on the "Finkbeiner Information", which appears every three months. By now I have assembled an archive of facts and documents, enough to put together almost any Finkbeiner family tree. For those who are interested, here is my address: Guenter Finkbeiner
