  The day of departure

The day of departure
Breakfast at Heywood's Restaurant: pancakes and maple syrup for the last time. Sharon Lessard from Ellison Tours comes and says good-bye. There is yet another nice excursion in store for us: to Point Pelee National Park.

Lake Erie. The southernmost tip of Canada
Lake Erie. The southernmost tip of Canada
The park forms the southernmost tip of Canada. It lies on the 42nd parallel, i.e. on the same latitude as New York, Barcelona, Rom...
At the Visitors' Centre friends of Sharon's are waiting for us, their rucksacks full of binoculars and telescopes. We need them on the shore of Lake Erie where, at this time of the year, it is mainly hawks that we can watch. We marvel at a bush covered with monarch butterflies waiting for the right winds to help them fly all the way to Mexico.
Lake Erie shows us two faces: agitated, with heavy breakers to the one side of the tongue of land, calm and blue to the other. The warning signs are justified: the ground is treacherous here, quite a few who ventured out too far were pulled in to their deaths.

Diesmal ueberqueren wir die Grenze von Windsor nach Detroit.

We return to the United States via Windsor. The bus-driver exchanges a few words with the lady at the customs, and we may drive on. Hartmut expresses everybody's opinion: Steve is our man! We have to say good-bye to the two of them. They did a great job for us.

The counter is next to the entrance where the bus dropped us: no comparison with the odyssey at Frankfort airport.

On checking in the many Finkbeiners arouse interest again. We have the same seats as on the outgoing flight. We are also delayed again: some passengers have checked in their luggage but do not appear aboard, the bags have to be unloaded. We are well taken care of. Georg is trusted to distribute photographs of our plane, signed by the captain.
Hartmut, a steward, keeps up a steady supply of wine and beer and other beverages. We have a calm flight again, two hours shorter than the outgoing one.
